Clair Brothers Full-Range Line Array Portfolio: Positioning & Technical Differences of C-Series and i-Series Powered Line Arrays

Within the Clair Brothers Asia Series, two mature and complete full-range line-array families are available: the passive C-Series and the active i-Series. Both product lines inherit the brand’s original classic acoustic architecture and retain the four core acoustic signatures: depth, dynamic punch, immersive envelopment and consistent stability. Clear differentiation is realised across drive topology, factory tuning, supporting ecosystem, application scenarios and rigging solutions. Together they cover the full spectrum of fixed-installation sound-reinforcement requirements across Asia-Pacific, ranging from small multi-purpose halls and mid-size venues up to large-scale sports arenas.

The C-Series is a passive line-array platform consisting of two core models: the C8-A compact three-way line array and the flagship C12-A large-format three-way line array. It is engineered for robust reliability and broad project adaptability. Tuned for mid-size venues, the C8-A delivers a frequency response of 60 Hz-20 kHz with a maximum SPL of 145 dB. Each cabinet weighs 28.1 kg, with a maximum rig count of 24 units per array. Cabinet resonance around the 700 Hz region has been optimised, paired with Bessel-filter crossovers to enhance group-delay performance. It delivers clear, warm vocals with precise imaging, well-suited for mid-scale theatres, hotel ballrooms and premium Livehouses.

The flagship C12-A targets long-throw professional reinforcement for large venues. Its frequency response reaches 45 Hz-20 kHz with a peak SPL of 147 dB and a cabinet weight of approximately 52 kg; up to 16 cabinets may be rigged in a single array. To meet long-throw requirements in large spaces, dual high-frequency boost compensation at 4.2 kHz and 5.2 kHz is implemented for faithful reproduction of vocal and instrumental detail, yielding an open sound field with rich layering. It satisfies high-specification audio demands for large performing-arts centres, sports arenas and top-tier nightclubs. The entire C-Series works with ground-placed subwoofers including the CS118-i and CS218. Optimised for externally amplified projects without integrated flying-sub requirements, it supports retrofitting of existing installations and phased-construction deployments.

The i-Series comprises integrated three-way active line-arrays, featuring the entry-level i208-A and flagship i212-A. Built on proven three-channel independent drive and tuning logic, each cabinet undergoes factory-calibrated acoustic alignment and requires no external power amplifiers. The i208-A is optimised for premium small-to-medium venues, offering 60 Hz-20 kHz frequency response and 132 dB peak SPL at 28.1 kg per unit. Wide-band vocal boost at 1.8 kHz compensates for mid-range limitations inherent in compact enclosures, producing articulate, full-bodied vocals and even sound coverage. When paired with the flyable iS118-A subwoofer, it serves premium commercial applications such as mid-size auditoriums, cruise-ship entertainment spaces and corporate lecture halls.

As the i-Series flagship, the i212-A receives deep tuning for large high-end venues, covering 45 Hz-20 kHz with 144 dB maximum SPL and thoroughly validated factory tuning. Advanced 2.5 kHz filtering optimises sound-field performance and eliminates frequency-band transition gaps, delivering smooth, well-balanced mid-range and seamless full-range coherence. Matched with its companion flyable iS218-A subwoofers, it forms a complete integrated flying array. Its high system integration and neat physical layout make it ideal for high-end new-build projects including indoor gymnasiums, major professional theatres and large premium nightclubs.

Core distinctions between the two series lie in system architecture and project suitability. The passive C-Series relies on external power amplifiers and pairs with ground-mounted subwoofers. It offers highly flexible system configuration and wide-ranging compatibility, making it particularly suitable for venue retrofits, phased-build projects and sites with existing amplifier infrastructure. The active i-Series features on-board integrated amplification and forms complete flying reinforcement systems together with its matching flyable subwoofers. Neat rigging and simplified cabling accelerate on-site implementation, and it is best-suited for integrated new-build premium audio installations.

All line-array models retain the brand’s classic acoustic signature and hallmark immersive sound-field characteristics. Furthermore, enclosures are optimised with corrosion-resistant and moisture-proof finishes to withstand hot, humid conditions and non-stop operation typical across Asia-Pacific venues. Stable acoustic performance is maintained even under continuous heavy-duty operation. System integrators may select models flexibly according to venue scale, rigging plans and on-site conditions to build professional fullcoverage sound-reinforcement systems characterised by even coverage, refined sonic texture and dependable operation.
